I really want to start doing yoga, and plan to do it at home by buying dvds and a mat and all that but
I have no idea which type to do. I am an absolute beginner and my ultimate hope is to become more flexible and fit through yoga.
I have been doing research and it seems that Hatha yoga is the best for beginners but also that its very light and won’t actually constitute as much exercise. Maybe I should start out with Hatha and then move on to something more difficult later? what would that be? Or maybe there’s a type of yoga thats simple but slightly more strenuous?
ANY advice would be appreciated, which type of yoga do you recommend I do?
(also, any advice on yoga mats and good dvds would be greatly appreciated)

I wanted to try yoga, but I have a bunch of questions that I’m not quite sure how to go about finding the answers to, so I thought I’d ask here.
First, because I’m a total beginner, I want to go to a studio and attend classes. However, with all the stories are women going there and having their teacher be some pervert who got certified just so he can grab their asses, I want to know how you go about choosing a good, reputable studio.
Second, somewhat tied into the first question, how much should a good studio cost? I know it varies from place to place, but as a general, I wouldn’t trust someone that’s doing it for $10, but the places that want upwards of $500 are obvious gougers.
Third, is it possible to do yoga with bad knees? I’m unable to do more than three squats without my knees giving out, and I’m worried that with all the bending and stretching, I don’t want to risk injury.
Fourth, I’ve heard a lot of about hot yoga and how some of its practitioners feel that its more effective than standard hatha yoga. How much more difficult (other than the heat) is it than standard room temperature yoga? And how long should a beginner wait before switching from hatha to hot?
And fifth, for those of you that do yoga, do you do another workout in addition to it? I know that lots of exercise is always advisable, but from what I’ve seen online, I can’t figure out if yoga is just a warm-up for something more intense, or if its a good stand-alone exercise regimen.
And any other advice you could give as well please. Thanks!
