Necessity and ’60%’ Yoga
Donna and I began attending yoga class about eight years ago, largely due to health concerns. Doctors wanted her to have surgery on her spine to correct a troubling stress injury. The prospect of surgery scared us enough that we were soon looking for every alternative we could find.

Hey Yogis! Arms go numb during rag doll pose? What does this mean?
I am a Svaroopa yoga practitioner, (I’ve only been doing it for a few months now, three to four times a week for an hour at a time.) Every time I do the “ragdoll” pose, (paschimottanasna) my arms go very numb and tingly and my heart races,(probably just out of fear over the tingly arms.) I love this pose, and want to continue practicing it. Any advice? Has this ever happened to you? What does it mean?
I just though I should note that this pose is done slightly differently in Svaroopa than other styles, (you sit on folded blankets and keep your straight legs out at a 45 degree spread while passively “slumping” over, it’s not an active stretch.) Interestingly, actively stretching like this doesn’t bother me. I do have scoliosis, but it’s not severe. This kinda scares me, thinking that some crucial nerve is pinched when I’m in a fairly “safe” body position.
Here’s a super-cheesy youtube vid. of someone doing the pose I am referring to, (in the Svaroopa way.)
