Cool stuff.

Which one of the following kinds of yoga (in details) would be best for my lower back pain?

I have a herniated disc and it’s been suggested to me by many doctors that because I am only 27 years old, I should not have surgery (which costs about $50K anyway). I have had a lot of luck with my chiropractor and actually haven’t seen him since April of 2007, because I have been virtually free of pain.

Unfortunately, lately, my lower back pain has been getting worse. I always heard that sleeping on the floor was good for your back, so I’ve been sleeping on a thin layer of foam. I think that is the problem since I am not currently doing any back exercises. I know I need a stronger core too.

Here is the list of different kinds of yoga I found:
Ananda
Anusara
Ashtanga
Bikram
Integral
Iyengar
Kali Ray TriYoga
Kripalu
Kundalini
Sivananda
Svaroopa Yoga
Viniyoga

So which one would be the best for strengthening my back without hurting it more. Also, I’d like to do a kind of yoga that incorporates a lot of meditation into it. I’ve always wanted to learn how to meditate …
… because I have a very busy mind. I’m on medication for my anxiety, but it doesn’t always help when I need to be calm and collected the most. Thank you.

Restorative Bliss Yoga : Therapy for Life with Skyler Myers

Description
Skyler’s teaching focuses on the integration of body and mind through the breath. This Restorative Bliss Yoga practice uses the support of props, like blankets, bolsters, and blocks to encourage a deeper release and provide a completely supportive environment for total relaxation.

Restorative poses help relieve the effects of chronic stress through the use of props, moving the spine in all directions, including a gentle inversion which reduces brain arousal, blood pressure, and fluid retention. We hold the poses longer than in a regular hatha based asana practice. The emphasis is on relaxation, rather than straining.

Restorative yoga is beneficial in times of stress, especially during major life events: change of job, financial strain, marriage, divorce, death of a loved one. These postures can also be done in recovery from an injury or illness.

Your energy will feel restored, as if you just had a nap, but better! The more often you practice this, in conjunction with a more vigorous yoga and/ or physical exercise, the younger you will feel. If health leads to happiness, you will surely be on the path to Bliss! Enjoy your practice!

Skyler’s teaching focuses on the integration of body and mind through the breath. Skyler teaches several classes: a spinal opening bliss class and a more vigorous hatha. She commonly teaches pranayama and references classics like the Hatha Yoga Pradtipika, and Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, integrates some ancient Taoist, Tantric, and Tibetan practices. All of Skyler’s classes are complete with music, sage cleansing or aromatherapy, and sometimes a sung mantra during savasana.

Yoga: Yoga for Modern City Life – Hatha Yoga

There are actually several branches of yoga, including bhakti, the yoga of devotion, and jnana, the yoga of knowledge. The most widely practiced branch in the US, the one typically offered at gyms and exercise studios, is hatha yoga, which is physical yoga. But there also are different styles of hatha yoga, from the exercise-intense power yoga to the gentle chair poses used in svaroopa yoga.

Many of the instructors offer integral yoga, which involves stretching and bending into various positions called asanas, as well as breathing exercises and deep relaxation. By practicing and learning asanas, students can gain flexibility, strength, stamina and improved circulation.

Integral yoga is not religious, but it does offer an introspective, spiritual component that you won’t find in most exercise programs.

A typical adult class lasts 1 hour. First, the students center themselves through breathing, then come together as a group with a collective om. They do a quick series of cardiovascular movements, an hour of stretching and 20 minutes of relaxation while lying on their backs.

The relaxation period gives students a chance to turn inward. Some people are making lists in their head. Some people are asleep. Some people are just in a really great space, where they’re conscious of what’s going on in the room, and yet at the same time, completely and unequivocally out.
